The leadership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM) has asked the Lutheran community to be involved in charity work as one way of proclaiming the word of God.
The request was made through Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph P. Bvumbwe during the closing ceremony of the three days training workshop involving the Parish Development Committee (PDC) and the Congregation Development Committee (CDC) members of Lilongwe Deanery held at Lilongwe Cathedral Parish Centre from 4th to 6th August 2015.
In his speech the ELCM leader said that charity works reveal the love that human beings emulate from God through His Son Jesus Christ.
“As Christians we need to be the light in darkness. It is this light that will bring hope to the hopeless and have a reflection on the love that our God has to us. Being involved in charity works it means that we are bringing light to those who were in darkness such that their challenges will be dealt with our presence.” Bishop Bvumbwe said.
“In Jesus’ ministry, He could not allow any challenged person to pass by him without any comfort and deliverance. We Lutherans need also to do the same. Our PDCs and CDCs should pave a way to the well being of the needy and help to develop communities.” The Bishop concluded.
On his side, Vincent Matcheya, one of the participants thanked the church through Diakonia Department and assured workshop organizers that the training will help the parishes and congregation in Lilongwe Deanery in development and self reliance.
“The lessons that we have been taught here are very important such that we will be able to share with our fellow friends out there. Previously, we could miss some of the responsibilities as stewards but now we have realized the better way of how we can support the needy people,” Vincent Matcheya stated in his acknowledging speech.
Matcheya requested his fellow participants to appreciate the church through the Diakonia Ministries for holding such wealth training and for bringing them together to share experiences.
He further urged his fellow participants to be active in their various congregations so that the training would bear fruits.
This was the eighth workshop carried out in ELCM Deaneries aiming at empowering the ELCM church members to be well developed and be involved in charity work and be self supportive.
The training came at the right time when ELCM is facing challenges of economy to sustain itself.
With the church’s growth one pastor serves more than four congregations.
